Senate Minority Leader Lee Harris told Fox 13 in Memphis more testing and sampling needs to be done, especially in areas accessible to children.
“The part of the report that caught our attention was the number of young kids that could possibly face lead contamination,” Harris said.
The station found 3,633 children under the age of five, over the last five years, are living with lead poisoning in Shelby County. Sen. Harris wants to know where the exposure is coming from, along with ways to stop future contamination.
Senator Harris helped pass a bill this year that requires water suppliers notify the public and the state immediately when they find lead contamination.
