Senate Democratic Caucus Chairman Jeff Yarbro praises a federal judge’s ruling that requires a recount of Tennessee’s controversial 2014 abortion amendment.
Senator Jeff Yarbro said he wasn’t surprised by Sharp’s ruling. “It's basically just proper grammar,” he said.
Officials have long interpreted the state constitution to mean for an amendment to succeed it must get a majority of votes in the governor’s race — regardless of whether the same voters voted for both governor and an amendment.
Pointing to the vote, Yarbro said, “No one should feel comfortable changing the Constitution by a slim margin where there are allegations that proponents gamed the process.”
