Tennessean: Senate, House at odds on University of Tennessee diversity bill

Senate Democratic Caucus Chairman Jeff Yarbro spoke in opposition to an effort to strip state funding from the University of Tennessee's Office for Diversity and Inclusion.

Senator Jeff Yarbro was the only senator to speak in opposition of the bill during the floor session Wednesday. He read a UT student's email about encountering racism on campus. The student urged lawmakers to leave the funding alone.

Yarbro said he understood why the office has been criticized, but he suggested that defunding the office was a step too far.

"I believe that we are going to be sending a message that's much louder and much more negative than the one that we intend," Yarbro said.
